A little bit about UV…...

It’s a fact that without radiation from the sun, life on earth would cease to exist. Sunshine is important to plant and animal life, but there are certain portions of this radiation that humans could use in much smaller doses. Basically, ultra violet radiation has been divided into 3 groups of wavelengths: UVA, UVB, & UVC.

UVA, UVB and UVC can all damage collagen fibers and thereby accelerate aging of the skin. In general, UVA is the least harmful, but can contribute to the aging of skin, DNA damage and possibly skin cancer. It penetrates deeply and does not cause sunburn.

UVA light is also known as "black light" and, because of its longer wavelength, can penetrate glass windows. It also penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB light and is thought to be a prime cause of wrinkles.

UVB light can cause skin cancer. The radiation excites DNA molecules in skin cells, causing covalent bonds to form between adjacent thymine bases, producing thymidine dimers. Thymidine dimers do not base pair normally, which can cause distortion of the DNA helix, stalled replication, gaps, and misincorporation. These can lead to mutations, which can result in cancerous growths.

Unfortunately, your home may not be the haven you think it is from the sun’s UV. If you’re sitting next to an untreated window with exposed skin, you’re getting potential UV damage.

Window films are recommended protection by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

SKIN CANCER FACTS:

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer. More than 250,000 cases are diagnosed each year, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths each year.

One in 5 Americans and one in 3 Caucasians will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.

More than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure.

A person's risk for skin cancer doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns.

Approximately 59,940 melanomas will be diagnosed this year, with nearly 8,110 resulting in death.

One blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles a person's chances of developing melanoma later in life.

While melanoma is uncommon in African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians, it is most deadly for these populations because it is more likely to develop undetected.
