What is solar film and how does it work?
Solar film is a self-adhesive polyester film that is applied to the interior of existing glass. It’s used on vehicles, domestic and commercial buildings in order to upgrade solar control and safety. Solar radiation from the sun is made from 3 components; visible light which we can see, and infrared and ultraviolet rays which we can only feel. As solar radiation strikes a piece of glass installed with window film it acts as a “filter” to block harmful UV rays as well as regulating the levels of heat and light passing through the glass. The amount of heat and light rejected depends on the type of solar film fitted. There are two types of solar film: Non-reflective or dyed films that primarily absorb solar energy, and reflective or metallized films that absorb as well as reflect solar energy.
8 Reasons Why to Choose Solar Film:
Decrease Heat - Today's window film is extremely efficient at controlling the effects of solar energy. Window Film can provide up to 80% heat reduction.
Reduce Fading - Clear UV Window Film blocks up to 99% of harmful UV rays which is 40% the cause of fading. With the addition of a tint this will increase the protection even more.
Cut Glare - Direct sunlight, reflections from water or surrounding buildings all cause annoying glare which make it difficult to do day to day tasks such as reading or view television screens. Window films will vastly reduce eye strain that is caused by glare.
Enjoy Energy Savings - Areas which experience extreme sun or shade can cause interior temperature fluctuations. Window film can cure this problem and significantly reduce air conditioning running costs.
Increase Safety - Vandalism, environmental hazards and accidents can cause glass to break and can become very dangerous. Window Films act as a "safety net" by holding shattered glass together.
Enhance Appearance – Different coloured furnishings can make your property look uncoordinated. Window films can give a contemporary and uniform appearance to your office or home.
Increase Privacy – Even a very light window film can give increase daytime privacy. Windows which are next to public or overlooked areas can be protected from prying eyes without restricting the view from within.
It's Fast and Easy – Professional window film installation is quick and simple with minimal disruption to your day or work schedule.
Some common solar films:
Silver Reflective 15%
This film has the highest heat rejection and glare reduction properties. It rejects up to 80% of the total incoming solar energy from the sun. When the sun hits this film, it becomes mirror-like, and one is unable to see inside when trying to look in from the outside. It is therefore commonly used for privacy as well. During the day, (or depending on the lighting situation, at night too) one can see out through the film from the inside. It thus has somewhat of a 1 - way mirror effect.
Gray, Green, Silver, Neutral 50 %
These films are much lighter than the above-mentioned silver ones. They are much more subtle, and hardly noticeable once up on the glass. These films are commonly applied to residential homes, condos, or storefronts. Some may have a slightly green or gray tinge.
IR Film
This is the lightest solar film available. It’s so close to being entirely clear, you won’t even know that it’s on the glass.
Black (charcoal) 5, 20, or 35%
These are your basic “sunglasses” window tints. 5% is the darkest, and gives good privacy. 35% is the lightest.
